The Republic of Bulgaria is a republic in the southeast of Europe. It borders the Black Sea to the east, Greece and Turkey to the south, Serbia and Montenegro and the Republic of Macedonia to the west, and Romania to the north along the river Danube.
It is one of Europe's oldest countries.Bulgaria is comprised of the classical regions of Thrace, Moesia, and Macedonia. The southwest of the country is mountainous, containing the highest point of the Balkan Peninsula, peak Musala at 2,925 m, and the range of the Balkan mountains runs west-east through the middle of the country, north of the famous Rose Valley.
Hill country and plains are found in the southeast, along the Black Sea coast in the east, and along Bulgaria's main river, the Danube in the north.Other major rivers include the Struma and the Maritsa river in the south.

The climate in Bulgaria is regarded as one of the country’s main attractions, with four distinct seasons and generally temperate conditions. Summers are hot and dry, but comfortable due to low humidity, while winter weather is cold but not bitter.
Temperatures in summer average a comfortable 75 degrees Fahrenheit (24 Celsius). In winter this is about 32F (zero C). Northern Bulgaria has a moderate continental climate, while in the south it is intermediate continental, tending to Mediterranean.

Coastal regions are milder in winter and cooler in summer than in the interior, due to Mediterranean influences. The country’s mountain ranges (including the Balkans) tend to cause regional variations.
Bulgaria has over 10 major national parks and many reservation areas.

Bulgaria’s reputation as the cradle of Slav culture can be attributed to its rich history, from the treasures of the Varna Chalcolithic Necropolis (4600-4200 B.C), described by experts as “the world’s oldest gold and Europe’s most ancient civilization” to the legends of Spartacus and of Orpheus, born in the Rhodopi Mountains.
An ancient art, for which Bulgaria became renowned, is that of religious icon-painting - many outstanding pieces are on view in churches today, others form museum displays. Other traditional applied arts are still practised, among them fine embroidery and weaving richly-coloured rugs.
A number of ancient festivals have survived the centuries and still take place, among them the “Pirin Sings” and “Rozhen Sings” festivals, attracting an impressive 150,000 visitors. The range of the Bulgarian voice is unique enough to have been included in music sent up on the 1977 Voyager space mission!

Official name: Republika Bulgaria (Republic of Bulgaria).
